Wireless email and BlackBerry high availability from Double-Take® Software

Protecting wireless email for Exchange® and Lotus Notes users

Customers and co-workers expect that you are accessible and responsive, regardless of the infrastructure and technologies you have in place. Wireless e-mail might arguably be the greatest enhancement to employee productivity since the cell phone, enabling employees to keep up with e-mail when travelling.

So how do you protect the investment you have made in these mobile systems and ensure that BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the software that powers them, is always available?

Leveraging the value of Double-Take® with BlackBerry Enterprise Server

Double-Take® protects the data and applications of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) ensuring minimal data loss which enables immediate recovery from any disaster or system outage. Double-Take® utilises replication and failover technology that continuously captures changes as they happen and replicates those changes to any location. In the event of a disaster, Double-Take® lets you recover from your target servers in minutes, if not seconds.

Double-Take®, integrated with BES, can help ensure that wireless email environments maintain the highest levels of availability, allowing users to remain connected even when an outage occurs.

High availability for wireless email and BlackBerry with Double-Take®

Whether BES is running on the mail server or on a separate server, Double-Take® can ensure that all of the data is protected on a secondary server and can facilitate the failover should a failure occur. If a failure is detected, it can automatically switch BES processing from the production server to the backup server, start all BES services on that server, and run all necessary maintenance jobs required by BES. This provides a quick, efficient and automated method of ensuring that the BlackBerry system is back online and available to users in the fastest possible manner, often times before users are even aware there was a failure. Most importantly, the architecture does not require the reconfiguration of any BlackBerry handhelds or the RIM BlackBerry service.

A customer case study

National Center for Missing & Exploited Children

BlackBerry high availability: NCMEC is unique for many reasons, one being a 24-hour, toll-free hotline for the recovery of missing children in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Justice. When a child goes missing, 24x7 action is crucial and the availability of business-critical applications is vital to that process. Like many organisations today, NCMEC’s BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) is one of those critical applications. Their BES allows for constant communication and information sharing when looking for a missing child. Therefore, uptime (or minimising downtime) is an essential part of their overall disaster recovery plan.
